“ We need someone to get us ready for reading like this by giving us an overview.” (Daniels, Zemelman, 2014. Subjects Matter Pg. 34). Literacy is entangled in my content areas, science, social studies. I believe that I unconsciously chose science and social studies, because they are the farthest away from my personal trouble areas in school. Reading and writing with 100% correct grammer continues to be the most challenging roadblock for me. Whether I like it or not, literacy is the basis of every content-area. While learning, I encounter struggles to get around roadblocks. One example of a positive struggle is how I came to realize, through trial and error, I am a visual learner. I now know how to adapt to this type of learning style. An example of a negative struggle would be that when I have no interest or do not understand a concept in the reading, I will not gain any information from it and mentally discard it completely. I will also procrastinate and develop a feeling of dread leading up to due dates of a paper or exam. I wonder how many other students have similar learning styles to mine? I can guess that some of my classmates and even future students may encounter similar struggles. As a student, i have wondered why i generate different answers from other students? And then i get frustrated and think, “Why can’t I get it right on the first try?”. I read and write all the time. Reading is generalized to be a simple-enough task to master, so why do I fumble over reading and expressing my ideas clearly? Keeping in mind these posed question, maybe I can help my future students by showing them how to overcome literacy challenges in school.

Hey Jessica! I really liked that you chose to open up with that quote from the chapter! In class, I really like how our professor did the example of the cricket story before we had to read it in the chapter for the next week. I also totally understand having roadblocks for reading and writing because that is something I struggle with as well. I loved that you include your experience with positive struggle in schooling, and in sharing that with your future students I think that will make you very personable and relatable. Great blog post!!
